Surabaya, 5 September 2024 – PT Bank Jago Tbk encouraged hundreds of students from the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) to be proactive in tackling financial and career challenges that are becoming increasingly complex in the digital era.

During a talk show titled “The Future is Yours” held at the ITS Auditorium on Thursday (5/9/2024), several practitioners from Bank Jago invited students to explore and find solutions to fundamental issues faced by young people—from financial struggles to the challenges of building a career in the digital industry.

The discussion opened with the screening of a short film titled “Hidup Selalu Diatur” (Life is Always Controlled), directed by local filmmaker Ef Loygara. The film tells the story of a young man whose life has been controlled by his mother since childhood—from his hairstyle and pocket money to his career aspirations.

"Many of us might relate to the story in this film (Life is Always Controlled), including when it comes to our careers and finances," said Nanang Harianto, Head of General Services at Bank Jago.

Nanang shared his career experience in the banking industry, which was unrelated to his educational background as a graduate of the Civil Engineering Faculty at ITS. However, his willingness to learn and try new things helped boost his confidence in facing the increasingly competitive job market.

"Talking about careers and work is also related to financial issues. Since I started working at a bank, especially at Bank Jago, I've become more concerned with financial health," he added.

On the topic of financial health, Nanang explained that it closely relates to four levels of financial maturity. The first level is financial security, which means being financially secure in covering basic personal needs. Things like having enough to eat, paying for housing rent, or covering electricity and phone bills.

The second level is financial resilience, which means having better financial endurance. In this case, your income doesn’t just meet daily needs but also includes emergency funds for unexpected events.

"The next level is financial control, or having financial autonomy. This means earning your own income and no longer depending on others. Usually, people at this stage also start saving for the long term," Nanang explained.

The final level is financial freedom, or complete financial independence. “At this level, financial issues are generally resolved, you have retirement savings, and can even bring happiness to those around you,” he added.

Nanang continued, saying that concern for the public’s financial issues was also the driving force behind the founding of Bank Jago—a technology-based bank embedded in Indonesia’s digital ecosystem. With unique features in the Jago and Jago Syariah Apps, Bank Jago’s services and products are designed to be financial solutions tailored to the needs of the digital community.

"Everyone has different problems and life needs, as well as their own way of managing money. That’s why the Jago App—with its pocket system—is designed so customers can flexibly create their own financial solutions easily and seamlessly. Especially since Jago is integrated with the power of the digital ecosystem, like Gopay, Gojek, Tokopedia, as well as Bibit and Stockbit," said Nanang.

Jago Digital Academy

Continuing the discussion on careers, Dwi Gelegar Gilang Ramadhan, Employee Branding Engagement Specialist at Bank Jago, stated that nearly all industries—especially banking—are innovating their products and services to meet customer needs in the digital age. However, the shift to digital-based business in Indonesia faces significant challenges, particularly the gap between demand and supply of digital talent.

“If you look at the trend now, it’s no longer about what degree you hold or which university you graduated from. What the industry needs are human resources with analytical thinking, creativity, resilience, flexibility, and agility to adapt to rapid change,” Gilang explained.

According to Gilang, Indonesia still faces serious challenges in preparing graduates to enter the increasingly competitive job market. Therefore, Bank Jago felt called to share knowledge and experience in building a tech-based bank by launching the Jago Digital Academy self-learning program.

"Through Jago Digital Academy, we want to bridge the gap between what’s taught in universities and what the industry needs—not only in banking or at Bank Jago but more broadly to meet the needs of the tech industry," said Gilang.

Jago Digital Academy is a collaborative space for tech talents to accelerate their digital knowledge and competencies independently. Through this program, it is hoped that outstanding talents in technology and digital banking will emerge, ready to dive into the competitive workforce.
