In the digital era like now, online gambling has become widespread among Indonesian people. However, did you know that online gambling can ultimately ruin your life? Even though it offers convenience and fun, online gambling carries many risks and dangers that gamblers are often unaware of. This article discusses the various harms caused (including the social and psychological impacts that must be taken into account) as well as the legalities and regulations involved.

Negative Impacts and Risks of Online Gambling

Recently, online gambling has become a hot topic of discussion because it has increasingly developed in society. And, many are addicted to online gambling and have to experience the negative impacts. Indeed, nothing good comes from online gambling. In fact, there are dangers and negative impacts we all have to be aware of.

1. Financial losses due to online gambling addiction

People who are tempted to gamble generally want to try their luck, who knows, they might win big and become rich in an instant.

Therefore, quite a few gamblers are willing to keep spending money in the hope that the time will come soon to win. If they haven't won, they will keep trying and trying.

In the end, it is the financial losses that online gamblers have to bear. They continue to dip into their savings until there is nothing left. Some even go into debt and are willing to sell their possessions because of their addiction to gambling.

2. The effect of online gambling on mental and physical health and relationships with other people

One thing influences another, this is the danger of online gambling. Financial losses experienced as a result of gambling can have a negative impact on mental and physical health. For example, becoming often angry, anxious, having difficulty sleeping, depression or other negative impacts.

Interactions with other people are also affected. Relationships with partners, family and friends that were once harmonious become fractured due to frequent arguments, caused by gambling.

3. Online gambling triggers criminal acts

Financial losses experienced can trigger gamblers to commit crimes. For example, in order to get more money to spend, gamblers can commit fraud, robbery or various other types of crimes.

4. The security of personal data is at stake due to online gambling

No less important is the increasing potential for cyber security risks that arise when gambling. It is possible that many online gambling sites have been infiltrated by malware and viruses, putting them at risk of personal data theft.

Stolen personal data could include bank account numbers, date of birth and full name. When stolen by irresponsible parties, the data can be misused for criminal purposes.

Not only personal data, malware and viruses that are often found on online gambling sites also pose a risk to the security of the devices used and the data stored on them.

Legality and Regulations Regarding Online Gambling

Apart from all the dangers and negative impacts of online gambling that have been stated above, gambling is a crime. Online gambling is an act that is prohibited by law, as stated in Article 27 paragraph (2) of Law 1/2024 concerning the second amendment to the ITE Law:

"Every person intentionally and without authorization distributes, transmits, and/or makes accessible Electronic Information and/or Electronic Documents that contain gambling content."

Apart from that, assets obtained from criminal acts, one of which is gambling, are also regulated in the TPPU (Money Laundering Crime) Law No. 8 of 2010 Article 2, Article 3, Article 4 and Article 5 paragraph (1). TPPU perpetrators can receive a maximum prison sentence of 20 (twenty) years and a maximum fine of Rp10,000,000,000.00 (ten billion rupiah).
